One of the most popular shows on TV that everyone likes to watch is CSI. When watching that show one gets the immediate impression that securing a crime scene is of the utmost importance to maintaining integrity of all of the forensic information available, and we’ve learned from watching that show that it is amazing how much information can be garnered and how many clues there really are. Many things that you and I might look over are clues which will actually solve the crime. Okay so, let’s talk a little bit about how to categorize victims at a crime scene, and some the new technologies available.

One of the latest cool technologies happens to be a laser system which takes a 3-D rendering of the crime scene. All that information is put onto a computer and a CADCAM for later forensic work. Best of all, once you get all of this information in 3-D and can view it almost as if it is a hologram on a CADCAM computer, you also get the benefits of using all of the known mathematics which is also used in forensics. For instance, you can look at the blood splatter angles, where any weapons might be, how the person is laying, and re-create the whole thing.

There was a very interesting article on this that I think you should read titled; “Davenport, Iowa, PD Uses 3D Scanner for Crime Scenes” which was published on November 30, 2012 in Government Executive News. The article stated; “Photographs of crime scenes may become a thing of the past as some police departments adopt new high-tech equipment: a 3-D laser scanner. Police in Davenport, Iowa, have purchased the Faro Focus 3D, which collects visual evidence that can be revisited later — and even be used in courtrooms to illustrate a crime scene to jurors.” This in my view is indeed the future.

Now then, back to how to categorize victims of crimes, first, using the 3-D method you just need to get everything into the computer, something that might take a few hours, but it is much better than taking two-dimensional pictures of a 3-D crime scene from different angles and trying to piece everything together later. Having time to look over the 3-D rendering speeds up the process, and gives you better visual imagery, and allows you to use the spatial reasoning part of your brain to better piece together exactly what had happened. Then it is much easier to label the victims as; victim number one, victim number two, victim number three, and so on, because you can better understand which victim came first, and in what order things had happened in the first place. Perhaps the old way of doing things is not as important as the new way moving forward with all these new high-tech tools, strategies, and the future of 3-D renderings and holographic imagery. Indeed I hope you will please consider all this and think about it.
