It is a known fact that foraying into Bollywood is a Herculean task. One has to build the right connections and have the backing of a good PR team. Most star children are often provided with the perfect vehicle to launch their careers, but for actors from non-film backgrounds, the struggle is real. For such actors, the production house that launches them plays a very crucial role in determining their career graph. Let’s look at some actors who made it big, thanks to major production houses.
Shah Rukh Khan: Although Shah Rukh Khan debuted in 1992 with the blockbuster ‘Deewana’ it wasn’t until he starred in Abbas Mustan’s ‘Baazigar’ that he came to nationwide attention. Khan’s acting prowess piqued the attention of Yash Raj Films, who then cast him as the antagonist in Darr. Yash Raj Films also cast Khan in his most iconic role of Raj Malhotra in ‘Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge’ that earned him the title of the “King of Romance”.
Rani Mukerji: Rani Mukerji debuted with the lesser known ‘Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat’ in 1997. Despite starring opposite Aamir Khan in ‘Ghulam’, Mukerji entered into the limelight with Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions in the Shah Rukh Khan-Kajol starrer ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’. The role rejected by actresses like Twinkle Khanna, Raveena Tandon and Karisma Kapoor, won Mukerji the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress proving that working with major film production companies always helps.
Vidya Balan: After being touted as unlucky by several production houses down south, Vidya Balan hit the jackpot with Vinod Chopra Films Private Limited’s ‘Parineeta’. Balan became an instant favourite of the Vinod Chopra camp appearing in films like ‘Lage Raho Munnabhai’ and ‘Eklavya’ and was also sought by other companies like Balaji Motion Pictures (The Dirty Picture) and Viacom 18 Motion Pictures (Kahaani).
Deepika Padukone: Former model, Deepika Padukone made her star-studded debut as Shanti Priya/Sandy opposite Shah Rukh Khan in ‘Om Shanti Om’. Khan launched her through his production house Red Chillies Entertainment. The super-hit film earned Padukone roles with many other companies like Yash Raj Films and Dharma Productions, solidifying the role of an A-list production in launching an actor’s career.
Anushka Sharma and Ranveer Singh: Anushka Sharma and Ranveer Singh were launched by Yash Raj Films production house in 2007 and 2010 with the films ‘Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi’ and ‘Band Baaja Baaraat’ respectively. The duo has since worked with major production houses such as Dharma Productions, Eros International, Excel Entertainment, besides being favourites of the Yash Raj Camp.
